...Well, I think it's safe to say, we all do, and if you're going to have at least one friend, who better than God?
Ten short verses from Matthew chapter 5 outline these characteristics of a
follower of Jesus and therefore a friend of God. You'll find them in verses 3 to 12.
Martin Lloyd-Jones gives some basic principles
about these beatitudes by commenting....
1. All Christians are to be like this. These are
not just for the 'super spiritual', the elite, or the clergy.
2. All Christians are to manifest all of the
characteristics. We can't 'cherry pick' the ones we think we want.
3. None of the beatitudes are what may be called
'natural' tendencies. So no one has a head start and no one has a
disadvantage.
4. These characteristics indicate the essential and
utter difference between the Christian and the non-Christian in what they
admire, seek, do, and can do.
5. The Beatitudes show the true source of happiness
and contentment as something which is the result of finding something else.
Happiness is a by-product of holiness.
Come along for the Summer Sundays as we pursue
this way of life and seek to grow more like Christ and experience more what it
is to be a friend of God. We'd love to see you.
